  3. Refreshing and honest. SO glad you shared this! I can relate to the public speaking thing. When I took oral comm in college, I used to think I'd rather have, like, five teeth pulled at once than speak in public. When I actually got up there, told people how I met my hubby online and people laughed, though, it wasn't so bad...

How awesome is it that you had women like that to help you out in such a stressful situation? Those are the best kind of friends to have.

  4. Elizabeth, I love this! I have met so many authors recently who just adore you! Thank you for being a great agent, and for being willing to share this story. I hate public speaking too. Which isn't such a great thing in this line of work. Perhaps it will get better with time. (?)

  5. I love this! Such a great story! Claire is so wonderful. What you said about women and writers looking out for each other is one of my absolute favorite things about being a writer.

  6. Elizabeth! My first video thank-you! You are so kind, but I remember it well - you were a super star even then. Also, you might not remember this, but that boyfriend of yours inspired me to put a glass blower in my fourth novel, Life's a Beach, which I was writing at the time!

I love what you said about women helping one another. So, so true. As one of my characters once said, karma is a boomerang!

Wishing you continued joy and success. Your clients are so lucky to have you!

  9. A great idea, Stephanie! And Elisabeth, you may not like public speaking, but you're a natural in front of the camera. What a fun story, and lovely to hear about such kind support. Thanks for sharing this.

  10. What a great post. I love hearing stories like this. And it doesn't surprise me that Claire was so gracious. We've never met, but I know many fellow authors who think the world of her and I'm certain I would (will) too when we finally do.

    P.S. I would've chuckled at your intro!

  12. Ugh, I feel your pain. I am SO not a public speaker type. But unfortunately, it is sometimes necessary. Thanks so much for sharing this!

  13. Thanks everyone for chiming in! Claire is awesome.

And I think the public speaking gods are telling me something. Was just asked to be on NYU's MFA agent panel in April...am thinking I'll mock vlog it first...hahahaha

  14. Hi from another Hallie!

I can only imagine the terror! I have gotten better over the years about speaking in front of others, but on the spot, in front of 300...whew! You deserve some sort of award for that!

I love hearing about writers helping writers. It reinforces what I already know!

  15. Thanks, Elisabeth. I love these stories about the human beings behind the talks, behind the speeches, behind the successful books. The industry can feel so daunting at times, but these stories are a reminder that it's all made up of people.
